We will be using a practice quilt sandwich so please do not bring one of your finished quilt tops to class. The purpose of this class is to prepare you to be able to quilt that quilt when you get home.
To prepare your practice piece cut your fabrics the following sizes:
Top – 21 x21 (choose a fabric that will allow you to see your stitches such as a solid or tone on tone)
Batting 27x27
Back 27x27
PREP work before class.
Press the front and back fabrics with starch or an alternative. They do not need to be board stiff, just nicely pressed.
After pressing, lay the back fabric down with the wrong side up. Place the batting on top of the back fabric. Adhere the batting to the back by folding down the top half of the batting, spray the exposed back fabric with 505 (or similar product) and then smooth the batting back in place. Repeat the process with the bottom half.
Now center your top fabric on top of the batting. Adhere the top to the batting using the same process that you did to adhere the batting to the back. Be careful not to spray outside of where the top fabric goes or the excess batting will be sticky and could cause some aggravation.
Smooth both sides of your quilt sandwich to be sure it has adhered well and that there are no wrinkles.
Using your dual feed foot (if you do not have one use your walking foot) to baste around the perimeter of the top fabric using a 1/8” seam allowance and 3.5 – 4.0mm stitch length. This will keep the edges of the top fabric from catching on the embroidery foot (which could cause major aggravation).
