Happy New Year!!! We mean that greeting more this year than in years past as this is also: Happy 30th Anniversary To Us!!!!! That’s right, Calico Station will celebrate its 30th year in business all year long.
We’re starting many cool new year-long projects. You’ll see lots more info on them in this newsletter. We’re hosting several national teachers this year, starting with Harriet Hargrave in February. Her visit is a very special opportunity for us all to learn from the best in the world of machine quilting.
We’re introducing Triangle Explosion!!! Get more info inside, but we hope you join us in a series of half-square triangle exchanges.
We’re expecting delivery any day of Calico Station Tote Bags!! We’re excited about them – you know we’ve been trying to use fewer plastic bags all this year. Now we’ll have an alternative to offer you. We hope you love them—take them to the grocery store, too, we’d love to see them everywhere. Also…bring them to Calico Station on the 30th of every month and receive a 30% discount on everything that fits into yours…and they’re BIG!!!
We hope our enthusiasm is contagious. We invite you to enjoy our celebration as much as we do. Stay tuned for excitement all year long. Most of all…thank you for your loyal support. We know how lucky we are to have such great customers and we hope we make you feel appreciated and valued each and every time you come to the store.

When she first introduced free motion quilting in 1984 at Houston Quilt Market, Harriet set the quilting world on its ear, and has been changing the look of quilting ever since. Heirloom Machine Quilting is Harriet’s favorite class to teach, as the enthusiasm of the students is contagious. This is the class she is famous for.
Unique machine quilting techniques that will turn quilt tops into heirlooms in a fraction of the time it takes to hand quilt will be taught. The actual sewing is a small part of machine quilting, and the beginning of the class is lecture filled with valuable information so that the student knows what to expect and how to avoid the pitfalls along the way. A thorough discussion of preparing the quilt top to quilt, work space, threads, needles, etc. will be covered.
Hands-on exercises will be used to develop machine quilting skills, from walking foot ditch quilting, to free motion feathers. Harriet is a master at teaching students “how to learn to machine quilt”. Most of all, encouragement and excitement is taught, giving students permission to become great machine quilters.
We are so thrilled to have Harriet here at the store, Monday, February 8th & Tuesday, February 9th. Make your reservations now as class size is limited. Cost for two days: $130.

Camp Calico!!!
Calling all campers! This weekend is my idea of camping: comfortable beds, great food prepared for you and all the sewing time – with friends – that a girl could hope for.
February 26-28 are the dates and $160 is the cost. You can add Thursday as an extra optional day for an extra $25. On Thursday Pam and Martha will teach a class, but the remainder of the weekend is for sewing on projects of your choice and should be plenty of time to finish several quilts—or start a few new ones!
The Marriot Courtyard on Wells Road is the location and we invite you to join us. A $50 deposit will hold your place. We expect to be full, so sign up now. Just ask anyone who’s been to one of our other retreats…we do know how to have fun!
Moda Maniacs
The Maniacs are back! If you love fabric and expecially Moda fabric, this is the program for you. The cost to join our Maniacal Club is $60. For that you receive a FREE charm pack every time we get them into the store. We guarantee a minimum of 10 packs. We have a meeting once a month with handouts, free patterns and door prizes. You also receive a 10% discount on all Moda fabrics, any day. How can you resist???
We’re also starting a new Moda Block of the Month this year that we know you’re going to love. Come to our first meeting in January for more details and your first block. Our Anniversary Celebration Begins!
Mark your calendars for Friday, March 19th. That is the actual “birthday” of Calico Station and we’re celebrating. First, Penny Haren will be here during the day for a wonderful class called “Pieced Applique.” Penny lives in Ohio (I knew I liked her immediately!), and will travel here to teach us her really interesting and fun twist on piecing. That class will run all day for a cost of $60 per student.
Then, that night the party starts. We’ll host our Anniversary party. Join us for wine and appetizers. Then, at 7:00 Penny will give us a talk about her method. Trust me, she’s fun and exciting. She’ll have a trunk show to share and will do a book signing when she’s done. She has three books published now and her fourth is due to be in print just about that time. If you’re like me, you want them all and she’ll sign them gladly. The cost for the evening party, trunk show and lecture: FREE.
More details will follow, but sign up for Penny’s class soon. Space is, of course, limited.Triangle Explosion
That’s right…triangles are going to explode in Calico Station. This is an idea we saw at Market and loved. So many quilts require so many half-square trianges and starting in on them can be intimidating. Instead, have your friends make some of them for you!
We’ll have “Cinnamon Sticks” available starting in January. They will cost $2.50 and will each yield 56 half square triangles. Buy one (or ten!), take them home and make them, return them to the “pot” here at the store. We’ll keep track of how many each of you contributes to the “pot” by March 1. Then we’ll have a Triangle Party in March where everyone will receive a baggie with that same number of assorted half-square triangles. We’ll give you ideas and inspiration on using those triangles in wonderful projects.
We’ve done this exchange here in the store already and loved it. Now it’s your turn and we can hardly wait. In order to help you make your triangles as perfect as you (and everyone else) want them to be, come to a quick, FREE class and make a set with instruction: Tuesday, January 12 at 9:30 OR Saturday, January 30 at 10:30.

Year-Long Projects for 2010!!!
$5 Quilt
Wait until you see this year’s quilt! You’re going to love it. Come in January, buy a kit for the first block for $5. Every month after that, attend the meeting, on time, with your last month’s block finished and receive that month’s block free. We’ll have add-on blocks for sale just like we have the last several years. The quilt will be new…the program hasn’t changed a bit. Come to a January meeting (see calendar for dates) and get all the details.

Thimbleberries Club
This is our longest-running club and we have fun! We meet every month and celebrate all things “Thimbleberry” including fabrics, patterns and, often, even recipes. We’ll be working on a great new quilt this year in your choice of two colors. Every month’s meeting includes a newsletter, free patterns and lots of sharing. This year’s club will begin in February, so join us then to join the fun. Cost of club: $10

30th Anniversary Celebration Quilts
We decided against another large quilt for our Anniversary Celebration and will, instead, be offering a fun, small quilt kit every month. Here’s how it’ll work: We’ll select a pattern for every month and create a kit for it. We’re going to make 30 kits…and only 30 kits! The kits will be ready every month on the 1st of the month for you to purchase…for $30, of course!! (January’s kit won’t be ready until Meet the Teachers). Look for them to be fun, easy and a great bargain.
Bespoken Blooms Block of the Month
This is a gorgeous new quilt designed by Robyn Pandolph. The fabric for the quilt is also designed by her and we think you’re going to love it. It includes a lot of appliqué – you’ll choose the method you prefer.
Monday, February 1st will be the kick-off meeting for this project. We’ll have your first kits and all your finishing fabrics for you at that meeting. We’ll also give you some of our favorite pointers on both machine and hand appliqué techniques. After that, we’ll have your monthly kits available for you at the beginning of each month.
Notice that there are both machine- and hand-applique classes on this newsletter. You might want to take one – or both – of those to perfect your skills for this quilt.
Bespoken Blooms - January
Stitcher’s Garden
We saw it at market and decided then and there that many of you will love it. All the patterns are written as lessons on your sewing machine! Haven’t used all those decorative stitches you have? You will on this quilt. Each class uses a variety of presser feet and the classes teach you how. This is more than a Block of the Month. It really is a Lesson of the Month and each month’s class will follow a Bernina Club meeting. This is no way means you have to have a Bernina to make the quilt. We just know that many of you will be here anyway and having class and club on the same day is convenient.
The cost is $45 to sign up and that includes your background fabric for the quilt. After that, each month is $15 to cover your kit and the class. Pay up front for the whole year - $165 – and save one month’s fee!
